The Blueprint of an Elite Gymnast: How TOPs Transformed My Gymnastics Journey

Growing up in the gym, my path was shaped by high expectations and elite standards from day one. I had the unique privilege of being trained by my father, a high-level coach who understood the precise mechanics and absolute discipline needed to reach the top tier of this sport.

Under his guidance, I pushed past limits I did not know I had. That dedication led to some of the proudest milestones of my athletic career: becoming a Level 10 State and Regional Champion, ranking second at National TOPs, earning a spot on the TOPs National Team three years in a row, and ultimately standing on the podium as a silver medalist on floor at Elite Nationals.

People often ask what separates a good gymnast from an elite gymnast. While passion and natural talent matter, the real differentiator is a specific, structural blueprint. For me, that blueprint was USA Gymnastics’ TOPs (Talent Opportunity Program).

If you want to know what it truly takes to develop a young athlete into an elite competitor, it all starts with understanding what the TOPs program brings to the table.

What TOPs Can Do for a Gymnast

TOPs is a talent identification and development program specifically designed for gymnasts aged 7–10. It doesn't look at who can throw the flashiest tricks today; instead, it evaluates an athlete's physical ceiling for tomorrow.

By separating foundational preparation from skill execution, TOPs does three critical things for a developing gymnast:

1. It Builds an Unshakeable Physical Engine

The physical abilities testing in TOPs is legendary for its rigor. Gymnasts are evaluated on strict upper-body strength (like legless rope climbs), core endurance (timed cast handstands and leg lifts), and flexibility. This intense conditioning creates a dense, powerful muscular foundation. When a gymnast possesses that level of functional strength, advanced skills don't feel like a strain—they become a natural progression.

2. It Teaches the "Physics of Flight" Early

Elite gymnastics requires managing immense forces. The tight body shapes, hyper-extended lines, and core stability demanded by TOPs testing map directly onto high-level release moves, vault entries, and tumbling passes. Because the program drills these perfect shapes into an athlete's muscle memory at a young age, the transition to high-level technical skills is remarkably smooth.

3. It Instills Objective, Elite-Level Discipline

In TOPs, the stopwatch, the tape measure, and the form deductions are entirely objective. Training for it teaches a young athlete how to embrace the daily grind, track micro-progressions, and take ownership of their training. It builds the exact mental resilience needed to perform on a national stage.

The Takeaway

Looking back at my time on the TOPs National Team and my journey to becoming an Elite gymnast, I recognize that those grueling physical tests were the best gift my training could have given me.

Gymnastics is a sport where you simply cannot rush the process. Whether an athlete is aiming for college scholarships, elite national tracks, or personal excellence, the lesson my father taught me—and that TOPs reinforced—remains true: Elite performance is built on strong basics..
